I don’t know if this is a good book or not. It’s pretty silly at times…for example, there’s a part in which someone gives Lestat a VHS copy of the Judge Reinhold/Fred Savage movie Vice Versa…a body switching movie from the 80s that I saw about 50 times as a kid. But in the same moments, this person also gives Lestat copies of a HP Lovecraft story…and I do really like the trope of using real-life books and stories about vamapires and the undead and the supernatural as part of a description one’s own book of the supernatural. And also, this is a well-structured mystery novel or more a genre novel that is well plotted and paced. It’s silly because body-switching is silly.
It’s funny to me what this book does with Lestat as a human….he immediately dives in the worst sins humans can do…that’s not the funny part, but I kept thinking about Bender in the episode of Futurama where he becomes human. Also, did you know that Anne Rice invented Dexter? Lestat opens the novel as a killer hunter in Miami….sound familiar??
Anyway, I wasn’t sure I was going to pick Anne Rice up again, but I was recently thinking about how much I enjoy Stephen King and how annoyed I was that I didn’t like other horror writers mostly….except that I clearly have an affection for Anne Rice.
