Maybe I missed the point. Is it a book about karma? I am not sure. With that said, it really is not something I will be recommending. There is nothing redeeming about this book. I would not put my reputation on the line for this book. If you like it, please tell me why.
With most books I do not like, I really do feel bad about it. I understand the hard work that authors and illustrators put into their work. I am a writer (or pretend to be) and there really is nothing as bad as when your work is not liked or appreciated by someone. I am sorry Heidi McKinnon, I appreciate all the hard work you put into the text and illustrations, but everything is lacking for me. (I hope we still can be friends, after all, I promise not to eat you.)

The creature starts off the book informing us they have eaten their friend. Then then try to find a new one, but something is always wrong (too short, too tall, too scary or something). Finally, the creature does find a new friend, with unforeseen results and our monster friend does not have a Happily Ever After Ending. Again, I repeat, is this a book about karma? Or is it just a silly story about a monster who eats his friend, worries they will never find a new one and (spoiler) is eaten themselves?
The colors of the book are flat, the illustrations very simple. Maybe if there had been more detail that would have helped the lacking with the text. I Just Ate My Friend is a debut picture book that will appeal to some, but I am afraid, I am not going to be one of them.
