I enjoyed reading this book. It is the first Roberta Kray book I have read, and I will certainly be reading a lot more!
This basic concept of this text is that Sadie is looking for her ex husband so that she can get him to sign the divorce papers and move on with her life. Whilst on a train to where he is, she has a brief conversation with a lady named Mona. Mona strikes up a deal where she will get rid of Sadie’s ex and she can get rid of Mona’s father. Sadie thinks the lady is joking. Sadie finds her ex husband, gets him to sign the papers, then he dies!
I read a lot of mystery/crime books and there are a number of strategies authors use within these books that bug me. I was please to say that Roberta used none of these. From the start you know who the key players are. You meet more characters along the way who have enough ambiguity about them that make them highly interesting. As far as the ‘whodunit’, you learn this early on, so there are no false leads, or my least favourite ending to crime novels – it was this person, no wait, it was this person, hang on it was actually this person.
The characters in this story are very well developed. You have a great sense of who they are and can empathise with most of them. There is also a fair amount of frustration with some of the characters, especially the main one.
I give this book 4 stars. I really enjoyed it and will definitely be reading more from Roberta Kray.
