First Star: A Bear and Mole Story is the fifth adventure of Bear and Mole. The relationship between these two friends is like Frog and Toad or Morris and Boris: a little awkward at times, little frustrating at times, but they always care about each other. Sometimes a parent and child relationship takes form as well. With Bear the parent/teacher and Mole the child/learning.
This time Bear and Mole have decided that they will hike up to Camp Tiptop and stay the night. They pick berries, do a lot of climbing and finally are ready to see the stars turn on. To help Mole be a little less nervous of the dark, Bear tells the story of how the First Bears created the moon and the stars. Will Hillenbrand’s sweet text and even sweeter illustrations make for a pleasant any time read, but for certain a lovely bedtime tale.
Bear and Mole stories focus on everyday things that kids do and feel, such as fly kites, being afraid of the dark, telling stories, learning about money and understanding about Spring. They are very simple stories and basic text. These things allow for easy access for the younger child. The text also allows the beginning reader to start reading by themselves, though some will need a little help from time-to-time. The bright colors make even the night time be friendly and welcoming.
This series is very much in Hillenbrand’s signature style. While not religious, they do have a more spiritual feel.
