This was a great book for disappearing into. You have those days (weeks) where you just need to be somewhere else? This series really does the trick. They suck you in nicely and you can just exist elsewhere for an hour or two or three.
Book 2 of Darkest Minds picks up a few months after the first. Ruby has been with the Children’s League for some time and is an efficient, if less than willing, weapon. Her abilities as an Orange allow her to read the minds of those they’ve captured and help incapacitate enemies when they are out on ops. On one such op, they’re rescuing a captured agent who turns out to be none other than Liam’s brother and just like that Ruby is back with the team she thought she’d abandoned. There are a lot of twists, as expected in a book about teenagers who can read and control minds, and honestly, most of them felt earned.
I feel like the first book established some interesting ideas about human nature (as all good sci-fi does) and this one just kind of runs on plot. I was okay with it, the plot was decent, but now that I’ve finished I’ve forgotten most of what happened. I still at least like most of the characters I’m supposed to (yay, Chubs is back!) and the moments that were meant to be devastating hit their mark. Still, I found myself reading the summary online just to know what happened before I plowed through. On to the next one.
