Amazon’s description of a Season of Flowers by Michael Garland starts off with the listing of the different flowers (Snowdrops and crocuses yield to tulips…) brings out the song “A few of my favorite things” loudly in my minds ear. The book itself brings out the inner artist eye. As well as the inner poet. And while this book many not become one of my favorite things, it is well up there in the “I like this a lot” category.
From Spring to Summer to Autumn the different flowers take stage and tell a little story about themselves. Then, in winter, they all sleep as good flowers should. Short fun poem/descriptions, vibrant, powerful colors and more information at the back of the book introduces, a garden throughout the year.
I must admit, I was never a huge fan of Michael Garland. However, I did enjoy his books. His bright colors, the silliness of images and just clever illustrations were things I enjoyed. I appreciated the work of the art. I understood how difficult it is to get the right word for the text. But, he was never a “go-to” author/illustrator. Yet, today I found two of his books. Daddy Played the Blues (see previous review) and this one. I think why these two stand out (at least for me) they are not his traditional style of art. Making them stand alone treats. With that said, I am for sure now going to go back and look at his other works.
And with all of that said, Daddy and Seasons will be two books I will be giving as gifts to my friends and family.
