Caterpillars Dotty and Stripe do everything together. They eat, sleep and play in all the ways caterpillars do! That is until the day Stripe is very tired and goes into a special sleep and he weaves his cocoon. After a while, Dotty does the same thing. After emerging, they notice that things have changed and not just because they are butterflies now. They look nothing alike (one has stripes and one dots), they notice that they do not eat the same foods and none of the butterflies that look like them hang out with the other butterflies. So does that mean they can no longer play together and be best friends?
While it is a simple story, the concept itself about friendships with different people (or butterflies and bees and other critters) and being happy with who you are is not a simple idea. Despite not looking the same or eating the same things, Barton’s story shows you do not have to be the same way to be friends. The story is sweet without being too pushy. You can read it anytime (a bedtime story or even a middle of the day book).
