Continuing the theme of “things that disappoint” …
What was this hot mess?
♫ I admit that in the past I’ve been a nasty
They weren’t kidding when they called me, well, a witch ♫
I am all about retellings but this was pretty weak. Ursula is ripe for the picking when it comes to delving into the psyche of a secondary character! She’s a fabulous drag queen octopus! How do you screw that up? How is she still a secondary character in her own story! Not just secondary but Ursula is really underdeveloped. The main focus is on the “odd sisters” and some girl named Tulip, plus her Nanny and a cat…
I can’t figure out if it was disappointing because it was actually the third in a series, so I was a bit lost, or if the “odd sisters” would have bothered me even if I was more caught up on their storyline. It seemed convoluted for no reason. As it stands, if you were looking for fabulous realness from Ursula you’ll be disappointed in this one. When Urusla is the focus it’s a pretty literal take on the movie, as in, word for word dialog. One chapter is just the lyrics of Poor Unfortunate Souls (which, I still sung in my head).
♫ Poor unfortunate souls
In pain, in need
This one longing to be thinner
That one wants to get the girl
And do I help them? Yes, indeed ♫
Oh and with how often they name drop Maleficent I have a feeling a fourth book is cooking. I’ll pass.
