100 Days of Cake is a book about a girl named Molly who suffers from depression. Her boyfriend broke up with her, and she had an episode at a swim meet that she doesn’t like to talk about. Since then, she gave up swimming and refuses to think about her future, college, or even getting her drivers license. The only things that keep her going are her job at Fishtopia and spending time with her coworker/crush Alex. They watch Golden Girls and eat lo mein, and you can obviously tell that Alex is into Molly, though she isn’t sure.
To help her daughter, Molly’s mom bought a book entitled A Baker’s Journey: 100 Days of Cake, and she makes one cake from it every day. Molly hates all of the cakes, though she tells her mom they are okay. Thankfully, Molly attends therapy sessions with Dr. Brooks. She has a huge crush on him, and he seems to like her back. It may seem like she is deluding herself, but this adult man in a position of trust does actually flirt with a teenage girl. It gets pretty gross. Like, he’s actually jealous of her crush on Alex. It’s a mess.
The big conflict happens when the owner of Fishtopia decides to sell the store. Molly is devastated, and makes a deal with him that if she can get their profits up enough, he won’t sell.
