One of my favorite thing about having kids is getting to read with them. That’s how I was raised. Some of my own earliest memories are sitting with my dad and reading through an old joke book that he got me. After every knock knock joke or pun we would throw our heads back, laugh, and slap our knees.
This review highlights a new favorite of my kids – Dance by Matthew Van Fleet. In this book, a newborn chick stumbles into a very cool jazz/big band/rockabilly type joint. He wants to hang out, but since he was only born yesterday, he doesn’t know how to dance.
Luckily, all of the animals hanging out the club are more than willing to show Chickie Baby the ropes. “First thing, Chickie Baby, just wiggle your hips, and do the Hippopota Hula, it goes like this!” Each page of the book highlights different animals showing different moves. My personal favorite is the Gator Mashed Potater. Each set of animals also has a pull tab that lets you see the moves in action. If you have especially active kids, the book might not last long. However, once you master the moves you can do them yourselves.
In fact, you can download the whole book as a song here and read or dance along. Inexplicably, former Survivor frontman/Bud Light “Real Mean of Genius” jingle singer Dave Bickler arranged and performed the song. Pretty cool!
If you like reading with your young kids and you like music, give this book a go. Make sure to download that track, Chickie Baby!
