I know that CBR participants are pretty fond of Liane Moriarty in general, but is anyone here still not sure if she’s for them? Let me help you.
Do you like…
- Books with an ensemble cast where each character is more nuanced and developed than most books with a single protagonist?
- Books with multiple subplots, all absolutely engrossing, that are tied up so satisfyingly at the end, one by one, that it’s like popping bubble wrap, but are almost never too tidy?
- Adorable Australian lingo?
- Perfectly executed plot twists?
- Books where the foreshadowing is sometimes legit and sometimes a total red herring and you never know which it’ll be?
- Books that frequently handle couples at a crossroads in their relationships, which are always handled both with respect for their shared history/children/etc. but also for the characters themselves?
- Books that beautifully tackle big subjects like mental health, domestic violence, infidelity, and postpartum depression without feeling like a Very Special Episode?
- Not sleeping, because short chapters that nearly always end on small cliffhangers mean that you will “just one more chapter” yourself into oblivion?
- Climaxes that deftly, perfectly tie together every plot strand at once and can’t be put down?
- Books that pass the Bechdel test?
- Old folks with complex inner lives?
- Children who talk the way children talk?
- Flawless pacing with the breeziness of a beach book, without being dumb?
I don’t know about you, but those things are why I read books. If you like them too, go get yourself a Liane Moriarty book.
