So once again, I can’t remember how I got onto this book, but I feel like someone recommended it to me. I put it on hold at my library like 4 months ago, and there were 52 people ahead of me. I finally just got it last weekend. At my library, you can’t renew books that have holds on them, so I knew I only had two weeks to read this one. It only took me 3 days. And if I started earlier on day 1, it would have only been 2 days. It’s one of those books that you can’t put down.
Lo is the heroine of our story. She’s a travel journalist, and gets the gig of a lifetime covering a posh river cruise’s maiden voyage. Unfortunately, she’s burgled (I love that word) in her apartment a few nights before she leaves. PTSD anyone? She gets on the ship and it’s amazing. I was jealous at first reading about it. Her first night, she meets a woman in the cabin next to hers, and borrows mascara from her. She’s wined and dined and shmoozed that night, and she ends up back in her cabin drunk. She’s awakened by what she thinks is a scream and a splash, and she freaks the eff out.
The rest of the story is a master class in gaslighting. Things disappear, her anxiety is blamed, and some people don’t believe she heard anything. I won’t spoil the details, because I think they’re cool.
Read alllll the way to the last page for a nice little detail that’ll make you smile at the end.
