What an absolutely odd book. This was assigned for my lit class which, as I’ve mentioned before, I was mostly taking as an elective to force me to read things I wouldn’t normally. And well, let’s just say that I would never in my entire life have read this normally. It’s a classic, so it feels odd to summarize, but I can’t be the only one late to the game – an ethereal unicorn goes looking for other unicorns, winds up captured, picks up a couple groupies, journeys all over the damn place until she finds the nefarious kingdom she’s looking for and does battle with a big evil bull.
When I was about halfway through reading this in preparation to write a paper about it, my professor had a cancer recurrence (I think he’s doing okay) and a bunch of assignments got dropped and their points redistributed to other, bigger assignments. This book was no longer necessary, but although I wouldn’t say I was enjoying it, I felt weirdly invested and decided to finish it anyway.
This book is just…interesting. It’s surreal and whimsical and magical and funny and so, so weird. It’s a fantasy classic and I really dislike the fantasy genre, but it had its moments. I read the entire book with a furrowed brow, but…I kept reading, so there’s that. I dunno. I have feelings about it but I can’t quite articulate them. I think The Last Unicorn may be best read under the influence of things that I don’t partake in. Goodreads loves it. It’s a classic. It’s a freaking weird book. I’m not sorry to have read it but I’m certainly not sorry to be done with it.
