This book wasn’t *bad*, necessarily, but definitely did not live up to my expectations based on the pretty awesome title and cover.
“I understood why Aunt Cordelia had dragged herself out to the road before committing suicide. Why she hadn’t let herself die on the property.
Because then she would have been stuck forever.
Like me.”
Sixteen year old Delia has inherited her great-aunt’s property — a rundown mansion also known as Hysteria Hall, since it used to be a sanitarium for “troubled” girls. Unfortunately, the place is a disaster, so Delia and her family move in for the summer to fix it up. Some supernatural things happen pretty quickly, and as Delia’s moving through the house trying to investigate more, the house kills her. The rest of the story features Delia as a ghost, trying to figure out the house’s secrets, and how to prevent it from killing again.
The premise is pretty cool, and Delia’s not a bad main character, but I just couldn’t get into the story. There’s some world-building going on, as the author sets up the various ghosts in the house, but it switches back to “save Delia’s family” pretty quickly and comes across as very scattered.
It is a great title, though.
