Like the title says – I accidentally started this series at book 3. Mostly because I didn’t know it was a series. So, once I figured it out, I thought I should start from the beginning. I really liked this book. I wasn’t surprised, since I really liked book 3 of the series. The actual main character (Anna) is the same, and some of the peripheral characters are too, but it’s a very different story.
Anna starts out in the lower ranks of of the Attorney of the United States office (AUSA). She’s ok with her job trying to prosecute domestic violence cases. Laprea Johnson comes into Anna’s office after her boyfriend beats her up. She wants to press charges and put him back behind bars. Allison does all she can, but by the time her trial comes around, her boyfriend has sweet talked her into not testifying against him.
In the meantime, Anna meets an old friend and falls in love. Unfortunately he’s the public defender of Laprea’s boyfriend. Long story short, bad things happen to Laprea, and there’s another trial. Anna has to face her now ex-boyfriend in court as second chair in a much higher profile case. She learns to respect (instead of fear) the big-shot lawyer she’s working under.
There are twists and turns, and obviously everything isn’t what it seems. I love how smart and good at her job Anna is. It’s nice to have a female heroine you can believe in. She makes mistakes, but she always tries to fix them.
I was reading this book at work at lunch one day, and a friend came up and asked me what it was about. I was only a few chapters in, so I was describing the law stuff that was going on. She said “what about the attraction?”, and I told her there wasn’t any yet. Then people started having sex. She was really happy when I told her that the “attraction” part started!
