Summary: Mare is a poor girl is a red village. Reds are inferior to the Silvers, who have silver blood running through their veins and incredible abilities to go with them. Mare believes she has no talent so she steals for her family. One night she meets Cal who gets her a job as a servant in the palace. It turns out Cal is a prince and not only a prince, but The Crown Prince of Norta. On Mare’s first day, she attends Queen’s Trial and is thrown into a force field which explodes due to her gift of lightning. Mare enters the dangerous silver world as Lady Marina Titanos and as she learns “Anyone can betray anyone”.
I enjoyed this book because they’re were so many things happening. It was never boring, there was always some kind of intrigue, problem and deceit happening. The Silver Court is full of secrets and Mare has become one of the most dangerous kept ones. As a red, she should be nothing, cursed to a life of servitude to all silvers. However, Mare is different and I liked her for that. She was sassy and intelligent; though not all powerful.
The world building in this novel was impressive. The “racism” towards the reds was realistic and terrible. They were basically looked down and treated as slaves. “Their Silver war is being paid for in Red blood.” Almost every silver acted as though they were better than any red just because they were silver, no questions asked. Silver is greater than red every time. I bet this is what minorities feel in the white majority society of the US.
The plot was intense. You thought you know the outcome and then boom plot twist! The ending! Holy crap, I did not see that coming! My feelings about Cal and Maven are all mixed up and I don’t know what to do about either of them. I have a huge love/hate relationship with them. I can’t wait for Glass Sword, I’m so curious about what will happen next. I recommend this for any fans of dystopian and court novels. Just remember, anyone can betray anyone…
