One of my favourite soap opera tropes is the use of amnesia as a way to clear the decks and move an otherwise stale character forward. However, now that I’m no longer watching soap operas because my husband won’t let me have cable I’m a contributing member of society who is above such nonsense, I occasionally need to get my fix of silly plots from books and netflix. When I saw that What Alive Forgot is both by Liane Moriarty and focusses on amnesia, I absolutely had to read it.
What Alice Forgot was the third book by Lianne Moriarty that I’ve read, and while I didn’t love it as much as I loved Big Little Lies and The Hypnotist’s Love Story, I liked it considerably more than The Husband’s
Secret. At first glance, the plot is identical to another book I read a few years ago. The similarities were initially so striking that I was concerned that I had already read it. However, as I continued to read, it became clear that the amnesia plot was the only real similarity and that What Alice Forgot was a significantly better read in a number of ways.
