I found Kim Wright’s “City of Mystery” series through Amazon, I’m pretty sure I got the books for my Kindle for free, or close to free. I will always give a free mystery a try (and believe me, there are plenty of lousy ones out there that I’ve happily downloaded and just as happily deleted after the first few chapters). This series is actually quite good. City of Bells, the fourth book, takes place in Calcutta, India.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the series, it takes place during Queen Victoria’s reign. The first (City of Darkness) takes place in London, when Jack the Ripper was ripping. A couple of unorthodox Scotland Yard detectives join up with some equally unconventional civilians to solve the murders. In the second book (City of Light, see if you can guess where it takes place) the group has begun calling themselves the Tuesday Night Murder Club. In the third book (City of Silence), the gang travels to St. Petersburg with the queen herself.
The fourth book finds the group heading to Calcutta, after Geraldine (their wealthy benefactress) gets a letter from an old lover who is in jail, having been accused of killing his wife. The detectives and their friends get caught up in the police investigation, and they also get caught up in the politics of the Raj.
Unfortunately, the story telegraphs the whodunnit portion of the mystery, but the book is still an entertaining read. It’s not on Amazon any more, so I’m not sure where one could obtain any of the books now, but if you can find them, they’re all worth a read.
