I just now realized that I never reviewed this book that I finished at the beginning of September so this review is under some serious mental cobwebs. Suffice it to say if I had been fired up about the novel, I would have reviewed it at the time.
Edgar, born mute, lives with his family on their farm breeding and raising dogs. It’s not an easy life, but it is a good one. When his estranged uncle returns and his father dies tragically, Edgar’s world begins to unravel and he makes hard choices for his survival.
I started out with the audio version and switched to reading midway, so that might have impacted my view of the pacing, but it was a bit of a slog. Though the book ambled on for too long in my opinion, the real issue with it is that the ending is wholly unsatisfactory. It is well done overall and well-written, but it just isn’t how the book should end. With the amount of time you put into reading it, the ending just leaves you feeling empty and dissatisfied.
