I checked out this audio book because I really enjoy The Colbert Report. I appreciate the character and the thinly-veiled satire of the show immensely. Thus, I genuinely liked the first 35 minutes or so of the audio book. Stephen Colbert narrates his manifesto with assistance from heavyweights Amy Sedaris and Jon Stewart among others. The book was nominated for a Grammy but lost to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, a slight that I’m certain Colbert noticed. I found it hilarious at first but as it went on I lost some interest. I suppose the shtick wore thin as it continued. Listening to the book rather than reading it probably contributed to the not quite monotony as well. Additionally, I missed out on all of the graphs and charts that accompanied the book. The length of the audio book was only three and a half hours which is very short but I’m not certain that more length would have been appreciated. I feel that by not reading some of the books, of which I Am America is modeled, that I again missed out on some of the humor. I can’t tell if the book was really Colbert’s idea or more of a money-grab by Comedy Central. I do think that Stephen would appreciate that I utilized my American freedoms to listen to a book instead of reading it, as reading is an inherently un-American task. Read this book if you like the Colbert Report and/or the Daily Show and you will not be disappointed.
