This book is mysterious, intervowen, beautiful, almost childish in its narrative, but definitely not in plot. It is a story told in past tense between a skeleton of a rabbit and an orange butterfly traveling across an unknown place. The rabbit tells the story of Sissy; a young girl with two different colored eyes. She travels with a man named fox from city to city, earning a living as story tellers. In one of the towns a man gives Sissy quite an important piece of paper and suddenly Sissy is chased both by Death and by Death’s daughter, Ginny.
This book requires investment; often reading and rereading the different panels traversing the various intents of the words and the pictures combined. The artwork is fantastic, painted as a western manga, the lines often give allusions to different forms and much time was spent in some panels to discern meaning from the chaos.
The story is sometimes dream-like, a feeling supported by the multiples of story-telling weaving in and out of eachother; Sissy tells a story, the Rabbit tells a story and Fox has his own story. We get a sense that each of these characters have a story to tell that would bring the book further together, but in these 5 issues most other character’s stories are only briefly hinted at.
This was a wonderfully twisted book, full of suspense and interesting characters that stumbled across eachother. The first chapters in particular were confusing, but slowly the story begins to come together and actually ends while still aluding to a possible sequel. I am not sure I would read the sequel. The plot was tied together neatly and I would rather revisit this world againg to explore it’s details than follow some of the characters on into new adventures.
